![]() Just as one example among many, the strafing barrel roll maneuver on approach back in the March-May timeframe last year was stupidly effective on the Gladius largely due to your ability to be aiming constantly at the center of the barrel while varying your pitch during the roll to throw your opponent's pip everywhere. I do believe it's pretty obvious I was pointing out the ability of pushing those maneuvers to the extreme by being able to aim offset from where you're pointing being an advantage, and not "I can't hit without gimbals." Like Shiroi0kami said, if you couldn't hit something with the Gladius when it launched then you shouldn't be flying it. Gimbals can move back from an overshoot without dealing with moving an entire ship with inertia. Therefore, you have to guess when someone will turn, so it is harder to hit them. If you overshoot your target, you correct back quickly because of the jerk/lag built into the ship. ![]() The final reason why fixed weapons are weak is that on drifty ships like the super hornet make it harder to hit targets. It is generally pretty easy to avoid fire from it even in the super hornet. Also, fixed weapons have a clear fixing cone that you can try to dodge around in particular the vanguard. Gimbal controls get your fire on target faster and cleaner. The reason gimbals are powerful is that when ships are maneuvering your firing windows are short. He is accurate with his head as most people with a mouse. If you want to see someone who is amazing at TrackIR, look up hydrogbigbang and his twitch stream. I actually just got to the point where I could do that with Track IR and hotas just at the end of 1.3. It is very hard to learn to move in 6 DOF and aim at the same time. The problem is when you have two players who can both dodge and maneuver then gimbals become very powerful. I will agree that flying fixed generally improves your maneuvering skill. I understand there is a bug with the Vanguard in AC where enemies cant target it. I use the hornet with fixed weapons in AC. Vanguard has helped me overcome my gimbals crutch. I think gimbals are super overrated now and I am starting to think of melting my ships with "permanent" gimbal mounts. I also am salivating at the idea of replacing my omnisky 6's with a size 3 version one day. ![]() It has changed me into a more well rounded player and I am enjoying the game much more because of it. ![]() Flying "fixed", I have more control of my ship and its "situation awareness" on the field because I am aiming WHILE flying my ship instead of trying to aim AND fly. When I use gimbals I focus more on aiming my guns than I do flying or dodging and I end up dying in some stupid way like sideswiping into an asteroid. What I noticed is that when I roll with fixed weapons, I focus on flying and maneuverability first over trying to aim my lag pips. Not only was I able to solo AC twice (with the hornet), but I did it only dying once. Ill tell you what, I am never going back to using gimbals. However, I decided to stick with it and after practicing with the vanguard for a straight week using nothing but fixed weapons, I came back to my SH and tried her with the omniskys on fixed mode (ctrl+g). I was very close to melting her down after I learned we could never gimbal the 4 m4as. At first I HATED the fixed weapons on the Vanguard because it did make it harder to shoot other ships. I was OK, but was never first in points in AC. I am a M+K player and before the vanguard I have always rolled with a fully gimbaled omnisky SH as my main dogfighter. I used to have one of those go gimbals or go home type of player. ![]()
